A Bloomy Afternoon With La Maison LavandeJuly 7, 2016
Both former journalists, Nancie Ferron and Daniel Joannette had a chance to uncover a common and unifying project. Enthralled by stepping into the unknown, they quickly perceived an entrepreneurial project as an opportunity to learn outside of their comfort zone and to grow in an unfamiliar environment. Together they founded La Maison Lavande, a Quebec perfumery located in an enchanting setting of the Laurentians.
It all started in 2006, when they suddenly caught a glimpse of the lavender fields whilst peacefully traveling across the Valensole plateau, in the french Gorges du Verdon. The breathtaking sight left Daniel with the profound desire to return to his family’s agricultural roots and start his very own lavender plantation – a seemingly surprising project in the eyes of his dearest Nancie.
Once back in Quebec and driven by determination, he quickly conducted research to discover the province’s particular climate was favourable to the culture of certain hardy varieties of lavender. Meanwhile, the seedling of a project began to resurrect a long-lost passion of Nancie’s: perfumery. January of 2007 was marked by a conclusive soil analysis leading to the first seeding of the properties. In less than a year, the first signs of a beautiful story sprouted from the earth, as the lavender plants slowly grew, providing a true purpose to the family’s long vacant grounds. La Maison Lavande finally found itself welcoming their first guests two years later, in 2009.
Today, La Maison Lavande offers a multisensory experience to all its visitors: a picturesque landscape, a gourmet exploration, perfumery products and a variety of goods for daily life. Summer is not only the busiest season, but also the perfect time to plan a visit – especially in July, with all flowers in bloom. A charming bistro will provide all the essentials to your picnic in broad daylight and a bunch of other activities will make your stop over at La Maison Lavande a complete and pleasant experience!
As entrepreneurs, Nancie and Daniel have created a veritable gem for their employees. Sensitive to work dynamic and organizational structure, the couple wishes to create a solid workforce that will evolve with the company. Amongst the team, the owners’ daughters, Florence and Marjolaine, were inspired by their parents’ fervent passion and wished to partake in the success of La Maison Lavande. Fueled by the freedom, confidence and independence that the girls are granted in their work environment, they share the same desire to contribute to the brilliance of the family business, through strategically conceived projects.
Though it was not the main objective of the venture, the creation of La Maison Lavande allowed the Ferron-Joannettes to explore the world of family-run businesses, through a collection of fun discoveries and challenges. Together, they thrive as a unit to clearly position the business as a Quebec-based perfumery. Their ambition will know no boundaries, as they profoundly seek to explore all potential markets: starting in Quebec and eventually spreading to neighbouring provinces and states.
The family in a few words
First thing you do in the morning?
Daniel: I check what time it is.
Nancie: I check if I have new messages on my cellphone.
Florence: I get my daughter out of her crib and the family morning routine takes over!
Marjolaine: I swipe through my social media applications. I won’t deny it!
Do you have breakfast?
Nancie: Absolutely and within half an hour after waking up.
Florence: Yes, but it is quite recent.
Marjolaine: Rarely. I’m usually not hungry in the morning.
Your favourite breakfast?
Daniel: Eggs and bacon.
Nancie: Pancake with fruits and custard if we don’t consider calories. Otherwise, it would be granola with greek yogurt and fruits.
Florence: Greek yogurt, granola and a drizzle of maple syrup. Or eggs benedict if we don’t consider calories.
Marjolaine: Anything with chocolate.
One word to describe you?
